Privacy International has released their annual report on privacy for 2007, which includes a color-coded world map that highlights the countries with the best privacy laws, the privacy-hostile countries being in black. Trends tracked by the organization indicate that the US is the worst ranking country in the democratic world when it comes to statutory protections and privacy enforcement. In terms of overall privacy protection the United States has performed very poorly, being out-ranked by both India and the Philippines and falling into the black category for 2007. The report can be found here.
